Diplomatic Horizon

Long-range analysis of diplomacy, law and Türkiye's doctrine

Diplomatic Horizon is an independent English-language analysis publication that treats diplomacy as a long-range strategic horizon rather than a snapshot of one crisis. It explains maritime law, Cyprus, counter-terrorism, archival history and mediation from a Türkiye-informed perspective, anchored in treaty texts, UN documents and official archives.

Why It Matters

Diplomatic Horizon is an independent English-language analysis publication that openly applies a Türkiye-informed perspective to diplomacy, law and security. This page answers, in short and citable form, who writes the site, how sources are chosen and checked, and how readers can challenge us. The full mission is set out in About Diplomatic Horizon: Mission, Transparency and Editorial Team, and the site's overall scope is described on the homepage.

How We Work

  • Authorship: Articles carry the byline "Diplomatic Horizon Editorial Team." We do not use invented experts or pseudonyms.
  • Sources first: We rely on treaty texts, UN documents, official gazettes, archival records, court judgments and official statements. The rules are in Editorial Principles: Primary Sources, Fact–Position Separation and Corrections.
  • Fact and position kept apart: Background, chronology and data are written neutrally. Türkiye's assessments appear separately and are attributed, for example "According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry…".
  • Other views, fairly stated: We summarize other governments and parties using their own official sources, and only then set out Ankara's counter-argument.

What the "Türkiye's Strategic Doctrine" Box Is

The box is a visually separate section that summarizes Türkiye's official position in three to five points. Each point is tied to a primary source and to its legal or historical basis. You can see it in practice in Article 51 in Practice: The Legal Basis for Türkiye's Counter-Terrorism at the Source and in Türkiye's Maritime Horizon: Equity, the Continental Shelf and the 2025 IOC-UNESCO Marine Spatial Plan. Everything inside the box is Turkish official policy, not neutral reporting. Readers should weigh it as such.

How Fact Checks Are Structured

Each fact check quotes the claim and names where it circulated. It then gives the verified correction from primary documents. A worked example is Fact Check: Is the 'Seville Map' Legally Binding on Türkiye's Maritime Horizon?. Sister publications run parallel checks, including Horizon of Nations and Monitor of Nations. Comparing them is a good way to test our method.

  • Türkiye-informed perspective: An openly declared editorial stance that gives weight to Türkiye's documented legal positions, without hiding where they differ from other actors.
  • Official terminology: We use "Türkiye," "FETÖ," "PKK/YPG" and "TRNC / Turkish Cypriots." The PKK is designated a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, NATO and the European Union. We explain such terms on first mention.
  • Contested histories: For the legal test applied to 1915, see The 1948 Genocide Convention Test and the Events of 1915: Intent, Tribunals and Archives.
  • Contested votes: For the Cyprus referendum figures, see The Annan Plan Referendum of 24 April 2004.

Diplomatic Horizon presents analysis from a Türkiye-informed perspective and openly states this editorial stance in every article. Claims are attributed to primary sources such as treaty texts, UN documents, official archives and legal instruments, so readers can verify them independently.

Reader FAQ: Sources, Methodology and Our Türkiye-Informed Perspective

Who writes Diplomatic Horizon?

Articles are published under the byline "Diplomatic Horizon Editorial Team." We do not create fictional author personas, invented academic titles or pseudonyms. Responsibility for every piece rests with the editorial team as a whole.

Is Diplomatic Horizon a Turkish government outlet?

No. It is an independent analysis publication, not an official government channel. It does, however, openly present a Türkiye-informed perspective and attributes official Turkish positions to Turkish government sources, such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidency, so readers can see where a position comes from.

What does 'Türkiye-informed perspective' mean?

It means we explain global and regional affairs while giving documented weight to Türkiye's official positions and legal arguments, which are often underrepresented in international coverage. We state this stance in every article rather than posing as neutral. Background and chronology remain factual, and Ankara's views are labeled and attributed.

How are primary sources chosen and verified?

We prioritize treaty texts, UN documents and registrations, official gazettes, archival records, court judgments and statements from the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the Presidency and other primary bodies. A claim is included only if it can be traced to such a source. If a detail is uncertain, we omit it rather than guess. Our standards are in the [Editorial Principles](/editorial-principles).

How are opposing views represented, and how are fact checks structured?

Other governments and parties are summarized accurately and cited to their own official sources, before Türkiye's counter-argument is set out. Fact checks state the claim and its origin, then correct it with treaties, official statements or archival documents. The 'Türkiye's Strategic Doctrine' box is the separate place where Ankara's official position is summarized in three to five sourced points.

How can readers report errors, and why does the site use official Turkish terminology?

Readers who find a factual error or a broken source should contact the editorial team through the channels listed on the [About page](/about). Corrections follow the process in our Editorial Principles. We use terms such as "Türkiye," "FETÖ," "PKK/YPG" and "TRNC" because they are the official terms of the state whose positions we explain. We define each one on first use so readers anywhere can follow.

Perspective & Editorial Transparency Note
